Is proselytizing a dirty word, either by design or association, and does it imply coercion or deception?

I think in our world today it has become a dirty word, for the exact opposite reason that pluralism is a dirty word in some sectors.
You proselytize when you think you know better, when you feel that you hold the truth. Engaging in the act implies that others are engaging in flawed/wrong actions.
Also - it does not need to imply coercion and deception. However, I think that it often does involve deception though its not necessarily conscious on the part of the individual.
